    What’s Going On Locally?

    About Rockland, Maine

Rockland is a community of 7,000 – a vibrant mix of long-term residents and newcomers of all ages who choose to make Rockland Home. With its diverse economy, historic downtown, beautiful location at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and quality of life — Rockland has it all.

A community of makers. Our diverse economy includes a strong manufacturing base, with manufacturers producing a wide range of products — ocean-going vessels, snow plows, furniture, specialty foods, craft chocolates — and everything in between. Rockland has fostered a community of “makers” since long before makers were a thing. Come for a job, stay for a career. A diversity of employers provides opportunity to change and grow.

Arts with an “s”. Rockland is also known as an arts center – whether fine arts, crafts, performing, literary, or culinary.  Two world-class art museums and dozens of galleries welcome Rocklanders and visitors alike. Crafters offer products and exhibits of all varieties. Performing arts include music, theatre, and film. Novelists and poets find their inspiration here. Foodies come for our award-winning chefs.

Historic downtown. Explore the vibrant mix of retail, restaurants, arts, performance venues, and services on a Main Street that has both historic charm and modern amenities. Enjoy a variety of festivals throughout the year, including the annual Festival of Lights where Santa arrives by Coast Guard cutter.

Working waterfront. Rockland offers both the saltiness and charm of a historic working waterfront with a diverse fleet of commercial fishing vessels, windjammers, working boatyards and marinas, the USCG station, ferry access to the islands, and all manner of marine services. Our maritime economy is our history and also an important part of our present and future. The City offers public access to the harbor through its municipal fish pier, two multi-use piers, and boat launches.

Natural and recreational amenities. With an amazing natural environment at the mouth of the Penobscot Bay, Rockland is ideally situated for outdoor recreation. There are waterfront parks on both ocean and lake. Pedestrians can explore the Rockland Harbor Trail or the unique ecosystem of Rockland’s bog. Boaters — whether sailors, cruisers, or people with personal waterfront — can explore the many islands and harbors on the Bay. And pedestrians can get onto the water too – by walking nearly a mile into the harbor on the Rockland breakwater to the historic breakwater lighthouse.

Making a difference. Home to more than two hundred non-profit organizations, Rockland is the service center for the region. If your focus is making a difference for your community, there are hundreds of places to work or volunteer.

A strong sense of community. Rocklanders get involved – In City government, community events, and helping each other. Rockland is both old-fashioned and modern. Salty and sophisticated. We are both rooted in the past and moving toward the future.

Connected to the world. While in some ways Rockland is remote and unspoiled, in others we are well connected with the world. High-speed internet is available throughout the town. Daily flights to Boston from the nearby Knox County Regional Airport in Owl’s Head make it easy to get anywhere. And daily rail service to Boston is coming soon!

Vibrant community. Diverse economy. Beautiful natural environment. Historic Charm. Opportunity to make a difference.

    Rockland has it all.
