The administrator does not go out and look for housing for a client, but they will provide the client with a list of landlords and their phone numbers in the local area.
People wishing to apply must make an appointment with the General Assistance Administrator by calling 207-594-0300 x. 226. Only clients with appointments will be seen. The General Assistance office is open Monday, Tuesday & Thursday , 8:00am – 11:30am.
General assistance may assist with rent, heat, utilities, food, and other basic necessities.

About Rockland General Assistance Office
General Assistance is intended to provide immediate aid within 24 hours of an application for people who are unable to provide themselves or their families with basic necessities such as rent/mortgage, food, heating fuel medications and other items that are essential. It provides a safety net when citizens have no other resources available to them. It is considered to be the last resort when all other resources have been utilized.
The General Assistance office is located at Rockland City Hall. The entrance is accessible from the back parking lot behind the building in order to provide each client with as much privacy and confidentiality as possible.

General Assistance Office Additional Information & Statistics
It is the mission of the city’s General Assistance program to provide short-term public assistance for our citizens that need help with shelter, food, or basic necessities in a professional, caring, and courteous manner.
The General Assistance program is legislated and mandated by State Statute and the Department of Health and Human Services. The purpose of GA is to provide basic necessities such as, food, shelter, utilities, fuel, clothing, and certain other items. It is not intended to provide total support to people and it is the last resort, meaning they shall have exhausted all other programs before they are assisted by the City.
