The Rockland Transfer Station has added two Solar Spark® Landfill Gas Vent Flares that sit on top of the landfill piles. These flares burn gases from the landfill, which helps reduce odors. Though the flares run all day and night, you’ll only see them after dark.
Vent flares on landfills are used to burn off and control the gases, primarily methane, produced by decomposing waste within the landfill, thus mitigating odor and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by essentially “flaming” the captured gas as it is released through vents; essentially acting as a controlled combustion system to eliminate unwanted landfill gas.
