FREE LUNCH FOR KIDS HERE AT THE LIBRARY
FREE Summer lunches for kids has started! With help from our partners at Healthy Lincoln County, we will have bagged lunches available for any kid under 18, from now until August 23rd. The meals can be given to-go, no need to eat on site, but they MUST be given directly to a human kid. Otherwise, there are no restrictions, any kid can come and ask for one! Thank you to the folks at the Medomak Middle School kitchen, our team of volunteer drivers, and Healthy Lincoln County for helping us provide this incredible service for another year. Any questions can be directed to Jessie Blanchard at the Rockland Public Library, jblanchard@rocklandmaine.gov, or 207-594-0310. For the menu and a list of other sites in Knox and Lincoln County, go to https://www.facebook.com/HealthyLincolnCounty.

Interlibrary Loan Pause
There has been a sudden disruption in the interlibrary loan delivery service. The van delivery service travels throughout the state, distributing the items patrons request from other libraries to you, and returning them to the lending library.
On June 4th received word from Maine InfoNet that requesting between libraries was being turned off immediately! We are as shocked by the abrupt change as we are sure you will be. We don’t know how long this hiatus will last, but more than a month is likely. While this situation is absolutely beyond our control, we nonetheless apologize to you, and assure you that we will keep you up to date as additional information becomes available.
Rockland cardholders will still be able to request and place holds on Rockland Library items, but will not be able to request materials from other libraries.
For more details about this very complicated issue, please follow this link: Van Delivery FAQ https://maine-msl.libguides.com/c.php?g=1393867

CLOSURE UPDATE
Work on the Rockland Public Library atrium has begun and last week, the lower sections of the glass were replaced with new, more energy-efficient glass. The next step will involve installing the new glass in the ceiling. This will entail considerable staging in the parking lot area and a large crane. The building will be closed to the public on the day or days when this work is taking place. We had planned to be closed June 12; however, the weather forecast changed; right now, the plan is for closure to the public on Monday, 6/17. The uncertainty is for the need for at least three consecutive days of clear weather. If anything changes, we will let you know!
The Rockland Public Library is located at 80 Union St. FMI: call 594-0310.

GOOD NEWS FOR KNOX COUNTY KIDS!!
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails free, high-quality books, once a month to children from birth to the age of five! Thanks to former Camden Public Library Nikki Maounis, this program is available to all kids up to five years old, in Knox County (plus Lincolnville).
Nikki was able to secure a local donor to fund half the cost of the program, with the Maine State Library funding the rest!
Camden Public Library is the local program partner for the Imagination Library, but you don’t have to live in Camden to sign up and start receiving books! Click here, for more information, and to sign your up your child(ren).

The Office is now available for rent by the hour; reduced rates apply for daily and weekly rentals.
Furnished with funds from the Rockland Public Library Endowment Association, supplemented by the Maine State Library’s Remote Work through Libraries grant, The Office is an inviting and private space designed for remote work, small meetings, and collaborative work. Among the amenities—a large monitor with cables to connect your laptop, both a reading lamp and task lighting, and a multi-function outlet tower, to plug in all your devices. The Library has also stocked it with some office supplies, including a stapler, scissors, and plenty of pens & pencils. The Office is on the lower level of the Library.
This is the first of many areas in the Library, being redesigned to encourage remote work through libraries, while maintaining space for reading and gathering. Stay tuned as these improvements will be rolling out over the next several months. Rockland Library will also be asking for library visitors to fill out some quick surveys, to gauge the use and usefulness of these improvements.
For more information, or to complete the booking of this or other meeting rooms, please call 207-594-0310, or email refdesk@rocklandmaine.gov

Rockland Public Library Additional Information & Statistics
The Rockland Public Library's mission is to foster community & connection, offer resources to inspire & encourage ideas, and provide the tools to explore our past, enrich our present, & empower our future.
The private value of any public service is defined as the value accruing directly to the participants of the service (Kalambokidis, 2004); public value is defined as the value of a public service to individuals who do not use the service, but who benefit indirectly as others use the service (Kalambokidis, 2004)
Libraries Encourage an Early Love of Reading, Leading to Greater Efficiency in Schools “Did you know that [Rockland Public] is a "Family Place Library," an initiative that helps libraries develop their full potential as community hubs for healthy child and family development, parent and community involvement, and lifelong learning beginning at birth? In addition to benefiting families with young children, this indirectly benefits all other local residents by making the community a more attractive place to live, which translates into better property values." Libraries Deliver Adult Educational Services, Benefiting Participants and Community "One of the most valuable but generally unnoticed services of our local library is the digital education programs for seniors. By helping seniors learn to use the Internet, the library fosters cultural awareness, self-sufficiency, and community investment in our older population. Indirectly this benefits all of us by helping to keep them in the community and contributing to its culture."
Libraries Build a Sense of Community, Encouraging Civic Engagement
"Our library is vital to our community as a public living room, where everyone—from natives to retirees 'from away'—is welcome, regardless of age, politics, or religion. While this directly benefits patrons, it also indirectly benefits the whole town because it makes the community a more attractive place, increasing home values."
Excerpted from The Journal of Extension April 2015 // Volume 53 // Number 2 // Feature // 2FEA1 (Note: Rockland Public Library was a participant in this study, in 2013/2014)
