  • Reading Room Concert: Emily Jeffies & Maisie Newell with fiddles

    Emily Jeffries

    Maisie Newell

Emily Horne Jeffries and Maisie Newell met almost a decade ago and have been playing together ever since. They will share their love of lively double fiddling, old songs, and sweet harmonies. Old time tunes, early country songs and pre-jazz fiddle “blues” will round out an evening of fun at the library!

Maisie grew up with Maine’s rich tradition of fiddling. Her musical experiences have run the gamut from playing in a bicycling circus band touring through Greece to playing in the orchestra for the World Ballet in Charlotte N.C. She studied classical violin at USM and the Hayes Conservatory and then travelled the world, exploring exciting musical styles from southern old time to Romanian Roma fiddling. Maisie soon realized she couldn’t beat Maine and moved to Montville where she now lives and plays music with her husband and kids.

Emily began playing old time fiddle as a teenager in Alabama. She learned to love crooked, “raggy” tunes while playing in Western Massachusetts. She grew as a square dance musician in Boston and honed her skills as a singer of harmonies and fiddler with local midcoast bands like Miner’s Creek and Jim Tolles’s Old County Road. Emily lives in Rockland with her family. She teaches music when she can and raises her two young children, who usually enjoy singing along.
