  • “Historic Sporting Camps of Moosehead Lake, Maine” – A Maine History Talk by Roger Moody

    Roger Moody

Local historian Roger Moody will present a program based on his new book, Historic Sporting Camps of Moosehead Lake, Maine. The book examines the past and present of sporting camps at some 35 sites around the lake that were established in the 1880s and 1890s and continue to exist today. Moody will share how the sporting camps were affected by technological change in the past century, as well as cultural changes like the advent of the 40-hour work week, the “back to nature” movement, and shifting perceptions on hunting and fishing.

Roger Moody is a graduate of the University of Maine, where he majored in history and government, and holds a graduate degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University. His career includes service as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and employment in local and State governments in Connecticut. In Maine, in a public service career spanning 28 years, he served as municipal manager in both Ellsworth and Camden, and as the Finance and Operations Manager for the Bangor School Department. He is the author of four books about Maine history; his work has also appeared in Maine Boats, Homes, & Harbors and WoodenBoat.
