  • Camden Conference Virtual Talk: Susana Hanock,

    Susana Hanock

The Camden Conference and Rockland Public Library are pleased to present Susana Hancock. Her talk, “Making Music, Finding Self” will be hosted on the Zoom platform.

We often think of music as art, as culture, as expression. For the Sámi in northern Fennoscandia, however, music is so much more. Focusing on both traditional joik and modern rap, this presentation will explore how Norwegian Sámi use music to give new breath to indigenous identity, preserve language and color the country’s political landscape.

Originally from Maine, Susana Hancock, DPhil, recently moved back to the state after living in around the world, most recently in the UK, where she completed three degrees at the University of Oxford in linguistics and anthropology. Susana is a global affairs specialist in global intractable conflict and Arctic policy. Currently, Susana is a lead reviewer for the IPCC’s next assessment on global climate change and is sub-chairing a study on the societal effects of changing Arctic Ocean for UN IOC-UNESCO. She is an active member of a variety of state, national and international boards focusing on social and climate justice. In her other life, she is an elite rower who has competed around the world and qualified for the 2016 Olympic trials.
