  • Summer Discussion Project Sessions

Site calendar version: The Rockland Public Library’s discussion project series, sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council, will be reading three texts in August. This discussion series is free and open to all. The Library will be reading from “Crossing Over: Works by Contemporary American Indian Writers,” a list of texts curated by Pat Onion at Colby College. In these works, American Indian writers blend western writing techniques with oral tradition to mediate between two cultures. Modern and contemporary American Indian literature has deep roots in an oral tradition designed to teach and to entertain, and from those roots come literary works of enduring instruction and delight. Daniel Chin will facilitate.

We will be meeting at 4:00 PM on the following schedule:

August 3: Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko

August 17: Tracks by Louise Erdrich

August 31: Fools Crow by James Welch

September 14: There There by Tommy Orange

At each session, we will read selections from Song of Rita Joe: Autobiography of a Mi’Kmaq Poet. Participants may attend as many or as few sessions as they like; you do not have to have attended a previous session to join. The Library will provide copies of all the texts, to be returned at the end of the series. Space is limited, so please sign up soon!

Registration via Zoom is required to join: https://tinyurl.com/3yd6uz6s. Email elewis@rocklandmaine.gov for more information.
