  • Camden Conference Virtual Talk: Jim Nickelson in Iceland

    Jim Nickelson

Camden Conference and Rockland Public Library present photographer Jim Nickelson on his artist residency in Iceland.

The Camden Conference and Rockland Public Library will present photographer Jim Nickelson in a Zoom presentation. He will be discussing his artist residency in Iceland and using art to help combat climate change. Please email pking@rocklandmaine.gov to request a link to attend.

In his presentation, Jim will discuss his 2018 artist residency at the Baer Art Center on the northern coast of Iceland. Through his photographs taken over his two weeks on the island, he will depict the varied and incredibly beautiful landscapes of Iceland. Seeing this wonderful landscape as well as the impacts of climate change that are already evident resulted in a redirection of his artistic work towards an activist stance. Jim will also discuss his newest body of work, The Anthropocene Surveys, for which this Iceland trip is both the centerpiece and inspiration.

Jim is a fine art photographer, custom digital printer (as Nickelson Editions), and teacher, and is also the author of Fine Art Inkjet Printing published by Rocky Nook in 2017.

Before committing himself to the photographic life, he pursued the classic artistic career path of NASA engineer and corporate attorney (with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the Univ. of Texas at Austin and a J.D. from Harvard Law School). Jim makes his home in Camden, Maine, with his amazing wife and daughter.

Jim has received numerous awards, including being honored as Artist-in-Residence at Acadia National Park and Arizona’s Chiricahua National Monument, as well as at Iceland’s Baer Art Center. Jim has also exhibited widely, including in museums or galleries such as the Photo Resource Center at Boston University (Boston, MA), Danforth Museum of Art (Framingham, MA), Center for Maine Contemporary Art (Rockport, ME), University of Maine Museum of Art (Bangor, ME), Michener Art Museum (Doylestown, PA), Bates College Museum of Art (Lewiston, ME), Three Columns Gallery at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA), University of Wyoming Art Museum (Laramie, WY), 555 Gallery (Boston, MA), VoxPhotographs (Portland, ME), Davis Orton Gallery (Hudson, NY), Center for Photographic Art (Carmel, CA), Preston Contemporary Art Center (Mesilla, NM), Spiva Center for the Arts (Joplin, MO), New York Center for Photographic Art (NYC), Ten High Street Gallery (Camden, ME), Kingman Gallery (Deer Isle, ME), Gallery Photographica (San Francisco, CA), and Silvermine Guild Galleries (New Canaan, CT).

Jim’s work resides in museum, public, corporate, and private collections across the United States and Canada.

This event is presented in anticipation of the 34th Annual Camden Conference—The Geopolitics of the Arctic: A Region in Peril, filmed live at the Camden Opera House and around the world, and presented via Livestream on February 20-21, 2021.
