Is your street lacking shade? Apply for a free street tree to be planted in the public way in front of your house! The shade provided by street trees helps to cool the air and the pavement on hot summer days. Street trees also help reduce stormwater runoff, provide habitat for birds and pollinators, and improve air and water quality.
How does this program work?
- Any interested Rockland resident can complete the brief Street Tree Program application.
- A limited number of trees are available. Residents selected to have a street tree planted in front of their house are notified by the Public Services Department.
- In the Spring, a young tree is planted by the Public Services Department in the public right of way, in front of the residence.
- Residents receive care instructions from the Rockland Tree Board and water the tree for two years as it establishes roots.
The City’s Public Services Department will plant the tree, all you have to do is water it for the first two years (May through October) to help it grow! A variety of tree species are available. In reviewing applications, the compatibility of available tree species with the proposed locations will be considered.
